On this page you will find information about hotels and other accommodation that the TPHOLs organisers have made special arrangements with or which has been recommended to us. There are many other options, information about which can be found on the Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board Web site.
NB: If you are thinking of coming to Edinburgh early to experience the famous Edinburgh International Festival and its associated book and film festivals and the festival fringe, we strongly advise you to book accommodation as soon as possible since it is in very short supply during the festival period. Any rates quoted below may not apply during the festival period.
In co-operation with the CHARME 2001 conference, TPHOLs has reserved a limited number of rooms in the hotels listed below. The rooms are reserved until 31st July 2001 after which time any remaining rooms will be made available to the general public. Rooms will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. When contacting a hotel, please quote the specific reference given below, as rooms are held under a variety of conference reference identifiers.
All the hotels listed below are in central Edinburgh but some are more central than others. See the comments for individual hotels for details.
Jury's Inn
43 Jeffrey Street
Edinburgh
EH1 1DG
Tel: +44 (0) 131 200 3300
Fax: +44 (0) 131 200 0400
Price: £65.00 single (including breakfast),
£70.00 double (including breakfast)
Reference: quote "Edinburgh University" when making a booking.
The Jury's Inn is about 5 minutes walk (partly uphill) from the location of the TPHOLs conference sessions and about 3 minutes from Edinburgh's main railway station (Edinburgh Waverley). Buses from/to the airport pick up at Waverley Station. The Jury's Inn is just off the Royal Mile, a street that runs between the Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in the oldest part of the city (see the information about Tourism for more details).
Hotel Ibis

Fax: +44 (0) 131 240 7007
Price: £69.50 (including breakfast)
Reference: quote "University of Edinburgh" when making a booking.
The Hotel Ibis is close to Jury's Inn. It is slightly closer to the conference site than the Jury's and slightly further from the railway station. Like the Jury's, the Ibis is also just off the Royal Mile.
Travel Inn
1 Morrison Link
Edinburgh
EH3 8DN
Tel: +44 (0) 131 228 9819
Fax: +44 (0) 131 228 9836
Price: £49.95 per room, per night (excluding breakfast)
Reference: quote "Edinburgh University (31167)" when making a booking.
This hotel is in the budget category. It is about as cheap as you are likely to find for a hotel in central Edinburgh. For cheaper options, see the list of guest houses below. The quoted price is for the room, so this may be a good option for people wishing to share a room. The Travel Inn is 20-30 minutes walk west of the TPHOLs venue. It is closer to Edinburgh's secondary railway station (Haymarket) than to Waverley. The airport bus stops at Haymarket but you would still have some distance to go to reach the Travel Inn.
Royal Terrace
Hotel
18-22 Royal Terrace
Edinburgh
EH7 5AQ
Tel: +44 (0) 131 557 3222
Fax: +44 (0) 131 557 5334
Price: £100.00 (including breakfast)
Reference: quote "Key Reservations TPHOLs/CHARME" when making a booking.
The Royal Terrace Hotel is more upmarket and priced accordingly. It is located 15-20 minutes walk roughly to the north of the TPHOLs venue. It is still quite central and close to the main shopping area of Edinburgh while being sufficiently off the main routes to enjoy some seclusion. We understand that breakfast is not normally served until 07:30. For people attending the CHARME conference that would not leave enough time to make the 08:00 bus pick-up some distance away, so if you are one of those people we recommend that before booking you ask this hotel whether breakfast can be made available at an earlier time.
Here are details of just a few of the guest houses in Edinburgh. We do not
have reservations at these places.
NB: The prices on this list may change so please check the price before
you book. Also, check that the times during which breakfast is served are
compatible with the conference schedule, bearing in mind that many guest
houses are a significant distance from the venue.
A guest house is typically a large house, part of which is someone's home while the rest is used for guest rooms and a breakfast room. Some rooms may have a private bathroom and/or toilet. Others may require the guest to use a shared bathroom/toilet elsewhere in the house (but usually close to the room). Breakfast is almost always included and a very substantial cooked breakfast of meats, egg, cooked tomatoes, etc., is usually offered, with cereals and toasted bread and a choice of coffee or tea also on offer. Guest houses don't tend to have very many dedicated single rooms and those they do have can be quite small and in awkward places such as in the roof space. Our advice is to quiz the proprietor when booking.
The guest houses are rated by being given a number of stars. Generally, the more stars the better, but this may refer more to facilities provided than to cleanliness, helpfulness of the management, and the like.
