Web based on demand video services have become extremely popular and make a lot of sense for both users and content providers. However, working within the confines of TCP and competing with other kinds of web traffic both present challenges to the performance of the system. Rate adaptation algorithms address these challenges by splitting content into small chunks encoded at multiple rates, and attempting to match the rate to the available bandwidth. These systems can be push or pull based, and although there is a trend towards pull based systems, both have pros and cons. There are also a number of other parameters which can affect performance, for example the available encoding rates, chunk duration, and the particulars of the adaptation algorithm in use. This project aims to use network simulation software to model and compare various approaches to web based video streaming. In this talk I will describe my progress to date and discuss in more detail the areas I intend to investigate.
