Computing is a rapidly changing field, and therefore the course at Glasgow University is continually reviewed and updated. The course has a modular structure. Our current, leading edge research influences the content of many modules.

Computing Science is a lot more than simply sitting down at a computer and writing code for programs. It can be that if you wish, but there are also many other aspects to the subject other than programming. For instance, you may wish to try and invent or study new ways for users to receive/input data into a computer. you might be more interested in hardware issues, or systems engineering or analysis and design.

Software Engineering Degree programme is slightly more focussed on software design and implementation. Entry is competitive at the end of second year, with places for around 20 students a year. Access to this degree is determined by second year Computing Science and first year Mathematics grades. If this is the programme of your choice you must achieve very good grades from first year onwards. The Software Engineering course is similar to the Computing Science course with the addition of a mandatory Summer Placement between third and fourth year, a special team project in third year and a specific module choice in fourth year.

Electronic and Software Engineering Degree programme combines study of both hardware and software and is taught jointlyEngineering Student with the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering in the Engineering Faculty. Students come to this programme through the Engineering Faculty to achieve a B.Eng degree or the Faculties of Science to achieve a BSc degree. In the Faculties of Science the first year compulsory curriculum comprises Computing Science, Mathematics and Electronic Engineering.

BSc Combined Honours Degree (4 years)

  • Computing Science and Statistics

There are many Combined Honours Degree Programmes in the Science, Arts and Social Sciences Faculties by which you can study Computing Science with another subject of your choice.

Mathematical Sciences is a Combined Honours degree between Computing Science, Mathematics, and Statistics which is administered by the Mathematics Department.
