Student Life at Glasgow University

Students' Representative Council

The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Glasgow was formed in 1885 to represent the interests of students on campus. It is run by students for students. All matriculated students are automatically represented by it* and are entitled to stand for election to its Council (approximately 35 members) and Executive (four members) and use its services.

Student Publications

The award-winning student publications are also run by, and based within, the SRC. These provide students with an interest in media the opportunity to gain experience whilst at University. Included among the ‘publications’ are:

  • Glasgow University Guardian: the biggest student newspaper in Scotland; a new issue is distributed every fortnight.
  • Glasgow University Student Television (GUST) is broadcast on several closed-circuit TVs across campus and online.
  • Glasgow University Magazine (GUM): the oldest student publication in Scotland.
  • SubCity Radio: which broadcasts on FM for one month a year across the West End and beyond. The SubCity team has also been the official radio station for T in the Park and broadcasts online all year round.
  • Media Week: an annual event which gives students the chance to learn about all aspects of the media through masterclasses and workshops with professionals.

Clubs and Societies

The SRC supports all clubs and societies that exist within the University by providing access to financial support, training for office-bearers, handbooks, email accounts, publicity through the SRC’s Clubs and Societies Newsletter and notice boards, as well as free minibus hire and access to a variety of facilities within the SRC building. There is a huge range of clubs to choose from, and if you don’t find anything which appeals, the SRC will give you the support and money to start one up yourself!

Students who study at Glasgow are able to choose between two excellent student unions, Glasgow University Union and Queen Margaret Union.
