How do I apply?

Computing StudentAll applications to Glasgow University must be made on a UCAS application form. (UCAS website can be found at http://www.ucas.co.uk) You can obtain an application form from your school, college, or direct from UCAS.
Note: The Degree programmes in Computing Science and Software Engineering are identical in Levels 1 and 2. Differentiation takes place at the end of second year. You can put either on your UCAS application and there is no need to put both.

Entry Requirements

For entry into all degree programmes offered by the Department of Computing Science you have to meet the entry requirements for the Faculties of Science and also for the Department.

Faculties of Science entry requirements

Scottish Highers

BBBB inc 2 from Mathematics, Physics, Biology or Human Biology or Biotechnology; Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Computing Studies or Information Systems (at least one of Mathematics or Physics or Chemistry is desirable)

or - BBB/ABC inc 3 of these Mathematics/Science subjects

or - ABBB inc at least one of these Mathematics/Science subjects.

For entry to Computing Science, Electronic & Software Engineering or Software Engineering must have Mathematics at B or Higher Mathematics at C together with Higher Computing Studies or Information Systems at B.

Applicants to the above degrees are strongly advised to take the 3 Mathematics units in the Higher Still course.

If applicants are presenting with CSYS or Advanced Higher qualifications in a subject in which they already hold a Higher at grade B or better, the CSYS or Advanced Higher will not normally form part of the conditional offer. If an offer is made on the basis of CSYS or Advanced Higher performance a grade C at CSYS or Advanced Higher is deemed to equate to a grade B at Higher.

A Levels

BCC inc 2 from Mathematics, Physics, Biology or Human Biology; Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Computing Studies; Botany; Zoology; Statistics; Science (Double Syllabus) (at least one of Mathematics or Physics or Chemistry is desirable)

or - CCC inc 3 of these Mathematics/Science subjects

or - BBC with at least oneMathematics/Science subjects.

Applicants to degree courses in Computing Science, Electronic & Software Engineering, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Astronomy or Statistics should normally have A-level Mathematics at C.

Notes

  • A-Level students are normally required to have at least AS Level Mathematics at B.
  • Computing Studies and Information Systems Highers are overlapping. Only one will be accepted for entry into the Science Faculties. Computing Studies is preferred by our department.
  • For entry into Computing Science Level 1 modules you must have at least a C pass in Higher Mathematics.
  • For entry into single honours you will be required to pass Level 1 Mathematics at University as a condition of entry into our Level 3.

International Students

Applications from International students are most welcome. These are dealt with on an individual basis. Please check http://www.gla.ac.uk:443/studying/international/ for more details.

HNC

Maths FormulaEntry into Level 1 Computing Science requires a pass in an approved Science and Technology subject at HNC level and a pass in Higher Mathematics or equivalent.

HND

An HND in a relevant subject will normally admit to the first year of degree programme. Admission to second year with a relevant HND may be possible with 4 Merits or specified grades in Integrated Assessments or Graded Units.
