What's Involved

Computing Science

StudentsA degree in Computing Science explores a wide range of topics. Topics such as programming and algorithms require mathematical thinking. Human Computer Interaction explores the interaction of humans and computers, looking at how computer systems can be made more intuitive and more receptive to users needs. Topics such as Software Engineering and Project Management are more business orientated and involve working in groups to plan and build large systems.

Courses

A range of courses are available including Computing Science and Software Engineering, as well as joint degrees such as Electronic and Software Engineering. Combined Honours can also be taken with a range of other subjects including:

  • Economics
  • Geography
  • Business and Management
  • Business Economics
  • Mathematics
  • Physiology (Neuroinformatics)
  • Psychology
  • Statistics
  • and other subjects in Arts and Social Sciences

Computing can also be taken in first and second year as part of another degree program.

Programming

Python LogoA brand new teaching curriculum has been designed for the year 2006-2007 which involves teaching with the Python programming language. Python is a modern industrial strength language. One of the largest projects that utilise Python is the BitTorrent file sharing system. It is also used extensively by organisations such as Google, Industrial Light & Magic, and NASA.

Programming Concepts

AlgorithmFor the first two years you will have the opportunity to create a range of applications using Python to learn a variety of programming concepts. These same concepts can be applied in a wide range of languages, and in year 3 the degree program includes excercies in C and Java, as well as introducing many other languages such as ADA and Haskell. An aim of the degree is that you will learn to keep up with future trends and be able to pick up any new language or technology in a short space of time.

Teamwork

The course includes several major team projects where you are required to work with other students as a to design and build a complete software system. You are required to work together to find information and arrange work schedules, making this very close to the type of project you might find while working as a software developer.
