The 6th European Summer School in Information Retrieval (ESSIR 2007) will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, hosted by the Information Retrieval Group of the Department of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow.
This five-day school (Monday to Friday) will give participants a grounding in the core subjects of Information Retrieval, such as Architecture, IR models and Evaluation as well as various important applications such as Web IR, Interactive IR, XML Retrieval, Question Answering and Multimedia Retrieval. Moreover, ESSIR 2007 has a strong focus on large-scale IR and covers some recent and trendy topics and applications in IR, such as Distributed and Peer-to-Peer IR, Web Usage and Mining, Intranet/Enterprise search, Blogs Retrieval and Information Retrieval in Context.
The target audience of the Summer School are advanced undergraduate students, PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and academic and industrial researchers and developers. The Summer School will include lectures from leading researchers in their fields, as well as demonstrations and panels.

The Registration desk will be open for delegates on Sunday 26th August 2007, at the Western Infirmary Lecture Theatre (the ESSIR 2007 summer school venue) between 3pm and 5pm.

ESSIR 2007 Social Network
We have set up a Ning social network regarding the ESSIR 2007 summer school. It might be useful for participants to have discussions, share information including pictures and videos, write blogs, arrange transportation, know about the things not to miss in Glasgow, find people to share rooms with, weather, FAQs, etc. Once you register for ESSIR 2007, you will automatically receive an invitation to log into the ESSIR 2007 Ning social network site. Future Directions in Information Access 2007 (FDIA)
A workshop called Future Directions in Information Access 2007 (FDIA) will be held in conjuction with ESSIR 2007 on the afternoons of the 28th and 29th of August 2007. The workshop aims to promote and encourage early research in IR, and compliments the summer school program by providing a forum for the students to expose their research, enhancing interaction between lecturers and students.

History of ESSIR
ESSIR is back in Glasgow after 12 years!
ESSIR 2007 will be the 6th European School in Information Retrieval. The fifth ESSIR (ESSIR 2005) was held in Dublin, Ireland. The fourth ESSIR (ESSIR 2003) was held in Aussois, France. The third one (ESSIR 2000) took place in Varenna, Italy, in 2000. The second ESSIR (ESSIR '95) was organised by the University of Glasgow in 1995 and held in Glasgow, Scotland, in conjunction with the BCS Colloquium in Information Retrieval, an IRIDES project meeting, and the final MIRO workshop. The first European Summer School (ESSIR '90) was organised by the University of Padova and was held in Bressanone, Italy.
