***************************************************************** IFIP Developing Countries Support Committee grants Announcement and Procedure ***************************************************************** HCI SCIENTISTS FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IN ASIA, INDIA, SOUTH AMERICA AND AFRICA TO ATTEND INTERACT '99 INVITATION and SOME POSSIBLE FUNDING from IFIP ANNOUNCEMENT INTERACT '99 is the Seventh International Conference on HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION (HCI) of IFIP TC13 (Technical Committee No. 13 of the International Federation for Information Processing). INTERACT '99 will be held in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom, 30th August to 3rd September, 1999. To obtain the Advance Programme and Call for Registration contact: INTERACT '99 Secretariat, Meeting Makers, Jordanhill Campus, 76 Southbrae Drive, Glasgow G13 1PP, U.K. Tel: +44 141 553 1930 Fax: +44 141 552 0511 email: interact@meeting makers.co.uk or web site http://www.bcs.org.uk/hci/i99 Some Funding Support Available With financial assistance from a Developing Countries Support Committee grant, IFIP is able to offer limited funding to assist some HCI scientists from Asia, India, South America and Africa to attend INTERACT '99. This sponsorship will enable a total of about 5 to 7 scientists to attend INTERACT '99. Conference Costs All scientists awarded one of the grants announced here will be personally responsible for paying their full costs including travel to Edinburgh and their conference registration fee. This grant cannot be used to cover the registration fee or costs of travelling to the United Kingdom. To help you estimate the costs you will have to pay inside United Kingdom some information is given here. The special reduced conference fee, ONLY available for scientists who receive this grant, is 250 GB Pounds (which includes morning and afternoon refreshments and lunch for each of the three conference days but not the conference dinner). The cheapest accommodation is at Heriot-Watt University where the conference is being held. Approximate costs for the cheapest rooms are 28.50 GB Pounds per person in a single room with shared facilities, or 39 GB Pounds for a single en-suite room. Accommodation costs include a full Scottish breakfast. Additional food might cost about 12 GB Pounds per day. Travel from Edinburgh Airport to the University would cost about 8 GB Pounds by taxi each way, assuming that you will be using air travel to arrive in the UK. So the approximate total costs in Scotland to attend INTERACT '99 will be about 470 GB Pounds to 575 GB Pounds. If the UK entry airport from your country is not Edinburgh, the cost of flying on to Edinburgh will depend on the airline you use. This cost is not included in the above estimate. You will need to check this cost yourself. Payment of Grants All grants will be paid in GB Pounds on arrival of the scientist in Edinburgh. (It is too costly and often not possible to send payment safely in advance). Additional Benefit Scientists receiving this grant will be able to participate in workshops and/or tutorials at no cost.
