Institution: Istituto di Elaborazione delle Ricerche, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (IEI-CNR), Pisa, Italy

Position: Full-time Researcher (permanent)

Personal:
Fabrizio Sebastiani (born 1960) graduated in Computer Science at the University of Pisa in 1986. Up to 1988 he worked as an associate researcher at the Department of Linguistics of the University of Pisa. Since 1988 he has been a member of the research staff of the Information Systems Division of IEI-CNR in Pisa, working in the areas of natural language processing, knowledge representation and reasoning in artificial intelligence, non-monotonic reasoning and logic-based information retrieval. From September 1989 to August 1990 he has been a Visiting Research Scientist at the Computer Science Department of the University of Toronto. From September 1993 to August 1994 he has been a Visiting Research Scientist at the Computer Science Department of the University of Glasgow. In academic year 1992/93 he has been (and also is for 1994/95) a Lecturer in Logic and Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Pisa.

Experience in research projects:
Since 1986 he has been involved in various research projects funded by the European Economic Community in the area of man-machine communication, databases and information retrieval. He has been involved in the CFID project, part of the ESPRIT I program, in the PROMETHEUS project, part of the EUREKA program, and in the FIDE I project, part of the ESPRIT II Basic Research program. He is currently involved in the FERMI project, part of the ESPRIT III Basic Research program and dealing with foundational issues in information retrieval, in which he is leader of the WorkPackage "Integration". He is also a member of the MIRO working group, funded by the CEC under the ESPRIT III program and dealing with multimedia information retrieval.

Current Research Context:
The Information Systems Division of IEI-CNR is active in the field of multimedia and object-oriented databases, information retrieval, library automation, formal methods for database design, knowledge representation in artificial intelligence. In the past, the division has been involved in various ESPRIT projects (MULTOS, COMANDOS, TODOS), ESPRIT BRA projects (FIDE I) and other European and Italian research projects. Current European projects in which members of the division are involved are:
