No 3D models are required although they can be used to provide timing data for behaviour if the animator does not wish to provide them directly. The artwork for a frame consists of a drawing which is associated with layers in a drawing hierarchy stylised as an Hierarchical Display Model (HDM) and interpreted as such. The layers are indexed in an image-centric manner which is used to position brush-strokes and may be warped in 3D or intepolated in 2D to follow the lines in the drawing. This approach supports the stable rendering of highly rendered styles which can include textured elements, like scraperboard and watercolour.
