Abstract

This motion centres around the hype that has submerged the educational value of CAL. We hope that the debate will determine whether computers can offer anything more than a pale immitation of human teachers.

Massive amounts of money have been poured into Computer Assisted Learning. Awards have been offered and presented for educational software. Careers have been forged on research in this area. And yet there have been miserable returns on all of this investment. It is a paradox that those Computing Science Departments that are ranked most highly for the quality of their teaching make almost no use of CAL.
