Title: Open Discussion On The Importance Of Context In HCI (Led By Gilbert Cockton and Steven Clarke) Abstract: Recently, designers have recognised the importance of considering the context of use of newly designed computer based artifacts. Considering context seems simple enough - the artifact is what is new and the context is what remains the same. However, the context obviously adapts to the artifact, so the context does not remain static. So what is it then? What exactly is it that is so important to consider in design? Without knowing what context is, designers will be unable to use it successfully in their own project. Through describing work already done on using context in design, we hope to provoke an interesting and lively debate about the nature of context and how (or if) it should influence the design process.
