Haptic virtual reality for blind computer users

Chetz Colwell, University of Hertfordshire

Abstract

This seminar will present a series of studies involving a haptic device which can simulate virtual textures and 3-D objects. The device has potential for simulating real world objects and assisting in the navigation of virtual environments. Two aspects of interaction with the device have been investigated: the perception of virtual textures and of virtual 3-D objects. In all experiments perception by blind and sighted people was compared. The results have implications for the future design of virtual environments. It is concluded that such a haptic interface has much potential for blind people.
