Cognitive Models and their use in Formal Analysis of Accident Reports, a First Step.

Marie-Odile Bes, University of Glasgow

Abstract

1st we introduce some theoretical aspects of verbal protocol analysis and cognitive models.

2nd we then present an extract of an accident report (CALI accident, American Airline AA965 20 Dec. 1995) taking advantage of the techniques used in verbal protocol analysis.

3rd we highlight weaknesses in the presentation of information and the way experts go about analysing the unfolding events, and propose ways of improving the actual situation.

We conclude on the issues that still have to be tackled.
