Dr. Saúl Vargas

Research Assistant

About Me

Research Assistant at the University of Glasgow working on the SUPER-FP7 project titled "Social sensors for security assessments and proactive emergencies management" with Dr. Richard McCreadie, Dr. Craig Macdonald and Dr. Iadh Ounis.

My PhD thesis, under the supervision of Professor Pablo Castells, is titled "Novelty and Diversity Evaluation and Enhancement in Recommender Systems". As a byproduct of the thesis, I developed RankSys, a Java 8 Recommender Systems framework for novelty, diversity and much more.

My publications until 2015 can be consulted in the web page of the Information Retrieval Group at UAM. Publications from 2015 onwards will be published in the web page of the Terrier Team at the University of Glasgow.

Skills

Recommender Systems

Recommender Systems

My main research topic during my PhD. I have a good knowledge about recommendation technologies, specially regarding the evaluation and enhancement of novelty and diversity in recommendations. I am the lead developer of RankSys, a Java 8 Recommender Systems framework for novelty, diversity and much more. My work on this topic has been published and presented in RecSys and other relevant conferences and venues.

Information Retrieval

Information Retrieval

I have done work on the diversification of web search results and query auto-completion for mobile search. I have experience in working with the Terrier open source search engine. My work on this research topic has been published and presented in SIGIR and other relevant conferences and venues.

Efficient and Scalable Programming

Efficient and Scalable Programming

While not being a research interest, I care about developing efficient and scalable implementations of algorithms and systems for my research. For this purpose, I have extensive experience in profiling, optimising and parallelising Java code, and in programming with distributed computing platforms and languages (Hadoop, Pig, Giraph).

Web development

Web development

Designing easy-to-access and user-friendly interfaces for your systems and algorithms is a requirement nowadays. Therefore, I have dealt with web technologies for designing good-looking interfaces (Bootstrap, jQuery) and powerful backends accessed via RESTful web services (Dropwizard).
