Curriculum Vitae

Education

2008-2013: PhD in Computing Science University of Glasgow, UK

Thesis: An Investigation of Eyes-Free Spatial Auditory Interfaces for Mobile Devices: Supporting Multitasking and Location-Based Information.

2001: MSc in Speech and Hearing Sciences University College London (UCL), London, UK

Thesis (with Distinction): The reliability of the ITU-T Standard Recommendation P.85 for the Evaluation of TTS English Synthesizers on the Web.

2000: BA Honours in English Philology (Distinction) University of Salamanca, Salamanca, Spain

Work Experience

Sep 2013-present: SICSA Research Fellow, School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, UK

The aim of this three year Fellowship running under the title of 'Pervasive Social Signal Processing' is to capture and analyse user behaviour by looking at nonverbal communication in social interactions in order to make pervasive systems adaptive to users interacting with public spaces. This work is being conducted in collaboration with Alessandro Vinciarelli.

Jun 2010-Oct 2010: Research Intern, Nokia Research Center-NRC, Multimodal Interactions Group. Helsinki, Finland.

I worked with Dari Trendafilov and Saija Lemmela on a project focusing on remote collaborative interaction in a mobile-shared environment.

2006-2008: Research Assistant, Psychology Department, University of Glasgow, UK

I worked with Dr. James Hillis as a member of the Vision Group carrying out research on human perception, decision-making and strategic interaction. The main purpose of this work was to develop statistical models of human decision making in both real and 3D simulated environments.

2006-2008: Research Associate, CSTR, Informatics Department, University of Edinburgh, UK

I worked with Volker Strom, Rob Clark and Simon King on the research project 'Expressive Prosody for Unit-selection Speech Synthesis' and also provided consultancy for CereProc Ltd.

2003-2006: Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, UK

Research Fellow, 2005-2006. Ultrasound Development for Speech Research (SRIF funded grant), aimed at using ultrasound to study and measure the speech articulators' movements during speech. I was involved in the development of a new head stabilizer to fix the ultrasound probe during the acquisition of data and also piloted the use of ultrasound to look at speech produced by children with developmental verbal dyspraxia.

Research Associate, 2003-2005. My main responsibility was to help validate a new ultrasound technique when collecting speech data and carry out research.

2002-2003: Development Engineer, Rhetorical Systems Ltd., Edinburgh, UK

My main responsibility was to design, carry out and report on, evaluations between Rhetorical Systems TTS engine and those of competitors. This involved, running experiments, collating and analyzing results, and producing executive summaries and detailed scientific reports. I actively programmed in Python to design evaluation tools and used Perl and Bash to collate and analyze data.

Research Collaborations

Nokia Research Center-NRC, Multimodal Interactions Group. Helsinki, Finland. 28/06/2010-02/10/2010

I worked as a research intern with Dari Trendafilov and Saija Lemmela on a project focusing on remote collaborative interaction in a mobile-shared environment.

Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (M-ITI). Madeira, Portugal. 28/09/2009-21/12/2009

I was awarded the Ken Browning Traveling Scholarship to carry out a research project in collaboration with Ian Oakley and Valentina Nisi on the design and evaluation of auditory interfaces for mobile audio- augmented reality.

Department of Linguistics, Phonology Lab., U.C. Berkeley, CA, USA. 01/04/2005-01/10/2005

I was awarded a six month EPSRC research grant under the title ''Incorporating aerodynamic modeling into vocal tract imaging'' (EP/C54806X/1). This work was carried out in collaboration with Professor John Ohala.
