In this talk I'll present some work-in-progress on hardware support for message passing in the Barrelfish operating system. We are looking at the problem of communication between threads running on different cores of a multi-core chip, and the challenges that emerge when communication occurs between threads from different processes, and when communication interacts with system functions (e.g., when the recipient of a message is not currently running). This is joint work with Richard Black, Vladimir Gajinov & Ross McIlroy.
