Assessed Exercise
Aims
To provide DEMS4 students with
- an opportunity to undertake multimedia design
- an opportunity to work with video and audio in a multimedia presentation
- experience with a video editing tool
- an opportunity to reflect on the differences between conventional interactive applications and multimedia presentations.
Objectives
At the end of the exercise, students should be able to
- shoot and capture video
- do the information, interaction and presentation design of a short multimedia presentation
- use a video editing tool
- write a short comparison of multimedia presentation with other interactive presentations.
Prerequisites
Some memory of HCI1, IS3 and GMM3 is desirable but not necessary.
Tools
- video camera (can be booked from the exercise coordinator, Phil Gray)
- microphone
- multi-standard video tape player (available in G081)
- iMovie, QuickTime Pro and other tools(available in G081)
Full Description of Activities
Summary
Working in small groups you will design, prototype and evaluate a short multimedia presentation on one of the following topics:
- A day in the life of a GUCSD <student, lecturer, administrator, ...>
- How to <use a video camera, send SMS messages...>
- Then and now in computing
- Or another topic of your choice, approved by the exercise coordinator (Phil Gray)
Stages in the Exercise
Done as a group
- decide on a topic
- specify your requirements, in particular
- presentation aims
- intended audience
- any other constraints
- become familiar with necessary tools & technology
- carry out information, interaction and presentation design
- produce a prototype
- evaluate your prototype using one or more appropriate techniques
- present your work to the class
- write a short report (3-4 pages) setting out
- design goals (what you set out to achieve)
- design features related to your goals
- outcomes of your evaluation (evidence of the effectiveness, or otherwise,
of your design
7. Hand in a CD (or reference to readable files), and paper documents where
necessary, containing
- the prototype (either on the CD or in directories readable by the DEMMS
staff)
- the report
- prototype design documents (task, information, interaction and presentation
specifications; evaluation design)
Done as an individual
Write a short report (4-5 pages) that
- describes briefly what your group did
- describes your contribution to your group's work
- based on your experiences in this exercise and relevant related material
(e.g., textbooks, research papers), compares multimedia presentations
and their design, authoring and evaluation to that of other interactive
systems with which you are familiar (i.e., in what ways is multimedia the
same or different from other application types?).
Deadline
5pm Friday 21March
What you must submit
As a group: a CD containing your multimedia presentation plus your group report
As an individual: your individual report.
Assessment
The group hand-in will be worth 14 marks and the individual report will be
worth 6 marks, making a total of 20% of the overall assessment for the module.
