I am a Professor at the School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, Scotland and a member of the Information Retrieval group I am interested in all aspects of information retrieval (theory, experimentation, evaluation and applications) in the textual and multimedia domain. My research focuses around the following three themes: (i) Social Media Analytics; (ii) Multimodal interaction for information retrieval; (iii) Multimedia mining and search. I lead the Multimedia Information Retrieval group which investigates research issues related to the above themes.

RESEARCH

My Publications are available from:
Information Retrieval systems retrieves relevant information given a user need (often expresesed as a query). However, emergence of "Social Web" has seen the development of applications and services that support greater level of user participation and creation of online content. This has created new opportunities for IR research. My current research reflects this and covers:.
  • Social Media Analytics
    • Semantic Topic Modelling
    • Event Detection from social streams
    • Recommendation Techniques
    • Deep Learning
    • Classification
  • Interactive Retrieval/Multi-modal Interaction
    • Affective/Emotion enhanced search
    • Gesture based interaction
    • Collaborative Search
    • Interactive embedded search
  • Multimedia Retrieval (Life-logging)
  • Privacy Modelling
We have a spin-out from our research
